Clean the portafilter and filter basket thoroughly after coffee extraction to remove coffee oils and residue
Accumulated coffee oils and residue can affect the taste of subsequent shots and may clog the filter, preventing proper extraction. This can also lead to hygiene issues.
If filter basket is clogged: Soak in boiling water for 10 minutes and clean with a brush, or use GAGGIA cleaning tablets.

1. Remove Portafilter
Rotate the portafilter left to remove it from the machine.
Be careful as the portafilter may be hot.
Work over the sink as coffee grounds may fall.
Burn hazard - extremely hot immediately after extraction.
2. Remove Filter Basket
Turn the portafilter upside down, tap gently to remove coffee grounds, then separate the filter basket.
If basket is stuck, gently tap it loose with a spoon handle.
3. Rinse with Hot Water
Thoroughly rinse the portafilter and filter basket with hot water.
Hot water is more effective at removing coffee oils.
Never use detergents or cleaning agents - they will affect the taste of subsequent coffee.
4. Dry with Clean Cloth
Wipe dry with a clean, dry cloth.
Pay special attention to drying around the basket holes.
5. Reattach Portafilter
Reattach the portafilter to the machine, but don't overtighten.
A loose attachment helps maintain group head temperature.
